François had wanted to be a dentist ever since his mum suffered from severe toothache, but she wasn’t able to get to the nearest dentist who was more than 1700 km away.
So François determined to be part of the answer to his nation’s dental crisis. He began getting up at 4.30 every morning to travel to university, excited to learn to be a dentist. But François and his classmates had a huge problem. ‘It’s not always easy to learn at (dental) school,’ François explains. ‘While there were lots of classes and theory, there was no way to practice what we were learning. I knew about teeth, but I had never touched them or worked on them.’
