HOW SCHOOLS CAN GET INVOLVED

The kids in Running Club.

Schools play a vital role in our work. By partnering with us, teachers and students can help transform the lives of children and families in some of the world’s poorest countries.

Students can also benefit from gaining a deeper understanding of conditions affecting developing nations, and building useful skills organising fundraising events in support of our work. Local schools and/or specific grades or classes can adopt Mercy Ships as their charity.

There are a number of ways that you can support Mercy Ships through your school:

FUNDRAISING EVENTS

Organising a fundraising event is a great way for young people to broaden their skills and work as a team while raising funds to help kids living in poverty in other parts of the world. Not only is it a great opportunity to have fun, but fundraising is easily tied in with learning relevant to the curriculum.

Does your school have a mufti day? How about recommending Mercy Ships NZ as the recipient of funds generated, or hold an event in the classroom, out of lessons, or a sports-based event, and even put Mercy Ships forward for the charity of choice for the year! Some ideas include mufti gold coin days, fetes, art auctions, bush dance, money boxes…the sky’s the limit! We’ll happily provide you with the materials and the resources you’ll need to begin raising funds and awareness for Mercy Ships.

Here is some fun ideas to help make a real difference.

DO A SCHOOL PROJECT

Many students have chosen Mercy Ships as the focus of their school projects. We can give any information needed, answer questions, and provide brochures, posters and any other materials you may need.

SET UP A FUNDRAISING EVENT

Doing a challenge? Set up your own fundraising page and get your mates to support you.

INVITE A SPEAKER

One of our trained volunteer speakers can give a talk at school assemblies, evening groups or during individual class sessions. Alternatively, we can provide you with DVDs, PowerPoint presentations and brochures that powerfully communicate our work to young people.

We love to share the Mercy Ships story with children at primary and secondary schools. The presentation is age appropriate and will introduce a whole new level of understanding to students about how people live in other parts of the world.
