I’m Fride and I lived on the Mercy Ship in West Africa from when I was 8 until I was 11 years old. My Dad was the ship’s dentist, my Mum is a nurse. I have a big brother and a big sister. We all lived on board the Africa Mercy in a family cabin, and we went to school on board with the other ship kids too.

The other important member of my family is my little toy dog, Captain Sabertooth- it’s the name of an ancient Norwegian pirate!

Living on the Mercy Ship impacted my life in such a huge way! Even though I was young, I know that it really made me who I am today. Living in a place that is very different from my home country of Norway made me see the world in a special way. I understood that there was poverty and there was sickness, but there was also hope.

Those three years on the ship imprinted such important values in me, like gentleness and kindness. I learned about compassion, hope, mercy, joy, and love through seeing lives being changed before me!

The chess piece from Episode 4 is a symbol of this for me. A young girl, Selene, gave it to me when she only had two other toys. She had so little yet she was willing to give me one of those things out of the kindness of her heart. It showed me generosity and selflessness in a beautiful way. The chess piece still sits on my shelf at home and every time I look at it I remember her. It makes me what to be just as selfless as she was!
