Alexandra Gordon - volunteer theatre nurse
A different kind of theatre nursing
Signing up to volunteer on the world’s largest civilian hospital ship is a remarkable step of generosity.
Alexandra explains, “I’ve dreamed about volunteering as a nurse for as long as I can remember! I can’t quite believe I am lucky enough to be helping provide care to those who go without and are in such desperate need.
Working as a nurse in a first-world country, I have noticed how much we take our health for granted – we minimise the benefits of “simple” or “straightforward” operations, the same operations that would be considered life-changing in a country like Sierra Leone.
I really believe in using my knowledge and skills to help others, and absolutely cannot wait to make a difference as part of an awesome team of people doing the same!”
Alexandra will be part of the hospital ship’s surgical crew. “I’ll be working as an operating theatre nurse, scrubbing in and circulating for surgical procedures.”
More about Alexandra’s volunteer work
The Global Mercy will be docked in Sierra Leone – one of the poorest nations on earth – during her field service, and Alexandra needs your help to get there!
Mercy Ships will be directly supporting the nation’s surgical care systems. Over the next 10 months, the volunteer crew on board will perform more than 2,350 life-changing surgeries, as well as train more than 200 healthcare professionals in the surgical ecosystem.
